The Four Seasons

Project management can be like the four seasons. At the beginning, it can be full of newness and a desire to succeed but this can become “Winter” like as the project loses its purpose or dynamic. These projects should be fixed or stopped. Opportunity should be sought rather than simply giving up and hoping the project will just go away.

Targets

Targets are often set in business at a high level. Net profitability, revenue targets, sales targets. But it is just as important to set specific targets at a lower level also throughout the organisation. Those smaller individual targets in each area will ensure that the high level revenue and sales targets are met.

Show Me The Money

The “Show Me The Money” attitude will cause even the most diligent employee to realign in an effort to reach their maximum bonus, regardless of their expected deliverables. Make sure goals and incentives relevant and aligned, otherwise it’ll just do more harm then good.

Learning from the past

Most businesses have delivered projects to customers before. So why is it that many still get their project estimates wrong and find themselves operating at less of a profit margin or indeed at a loss?

Support

A team can often be defined by its weakest link. Management are responsible for making sure that each team member is given the support necessary to achieve to to their fullest potential. Weak links are mostly created by neglecting team development not through a lack of desire by the individual(s) in question.

Engaging Communication

A project manager needs to do more than just follow process. Perhaps the most critical skill a project manager can possess is engendering great team spirit through open and constructive communication and team engagement. This will lead to a more creative team and ultimately more successful projects.

AFTER THE SHOW

When a project is implemented, it will have some sort of impact on normal operations (if in a business) or on the lives of an external customer (it it’s b2c). Planning for that impact is an important part of the delivery of any project and the more it’s considered as part of the project deliverables, the more successful the long term assessment of the project will be.
