Tracking, managing and understanding the costs associated with your project delivery is vital to ensuring profitability. Without understanding the costs, your business will never really come to grips with effectively managing projects to budget.
Project managers are generally given a day rate for each resource against which to cost their project. But understanding the makeup of how these costs are determine, we believe, is a great way to help project managers have a better overview of the impact their project is having on the bottom line. It gets them thinking as business managers as well as project managers.
When dealing with suppliers, by all means push back on the estimates and quotations. But don’t squeeze too tightly, you may not get the quality you were looking for.
Putting a project baseline in place is an important management practice to allow you to measure each project against specific criteria. The baseline gives the project manager a working tool to assess each individuals projects performance but further, it also allows the business owner to understand which aspects of projects are going well and/or badly and to improve further.
