Internal projects have a cost as well

effective project managementWhen we think of projects in our businesses we look at the client facing, revenue generating projects.

  • We worry about timelines.
  • We worry about costs and budgets.
  • We worry about customer satisfaction and keeping them on side.

When internal projects are run, in my experience, we tend not to be so diligent – especially for the smaller ones.

These projects can do many different things.

From moving a group of individuals from one place to another or perhaps implementing a new timetracking system.

When we run an internal project

  • There isĀ  business justification for doing so.
  • Time has been taken to understand why the business needs the project and time and budget are set aside.
  • Someone is made project manager.

Off we go.

  • Then the project manager is suddenly put on a client project so the internal project stops or gets halted.
  • Or the business case for moving that team somewhere else no longer makes sense, but no-one has noticed.
  • Or the time tracking system is not fit for purpose and won’t deliver the benefits.

Whatever the reason, the internal project is no longer on track.

What usually happens in these instances is that it just “muddles through” or else it just “fades away”.

In both cases, time and money has been lost.

Project managing an internal project has merit and should be taken just as seriously as those that are client facing.

Project management will pick up on the fact that the project is going “pear shaped” and will address the reasons for this.

Project management will ensure that the question gets asked as to “Why are we doing this?” and then tracking the benefits of implementation during and after the project.

So when your business considers projects, make sure that those internal one’s critical to your success are given the necessary oversight.
